Perched on the eastern end of Oriental Bay, these apartments were one of the firm’s most challenging jobs. However, their quality gained a New Zealand Institute of Architects Local Award and a prestigious New Zealand-wide Architects Award.
The apartments cantilever out from Carlton Gore Road over a steep cliff face. They are secured by piles and rock anchors set deep into the hill to withstand fierce Wellington northerlies that sweep across the harbour. Some days during construction it was so windy all work on the site had to cease.
Scaffolding was erected from the sheer face below and off the hill, and a crane was manoeuvred on site down a steep right-of-way.
No two levels of the apartments are the same. They feature many curves and extensive use of stainless steel, and premium materials are used throughout.
