Project Description

Palmerston North’s three-storey police station has undergone a full seismic upgrade and interior fitout to bring the old building back to life. Originally built in the ‘60s for the Manawatu Oroua Electric Power Board, it had an extension and seismic upgrade in 2004. The recent seismic upgrade design is complex and involved remediation of earlier strengthening works which no longer met current design standards.

The building, the Manawatu area’s main station, has remained operational throughout. The project has had to run without any obstruction or risk to police operations involving custodial areas; controlled items such as evidence, seized drugs or firearms; public interfacing areas; and juggling police staff around the building to suit construction activity.

Around 50 staff at any one time have worked on the project which has included new concrete shear walls, structural steel, carbon fibre strengthening to floor slabs, upgrade of building services and a fresh interior fitout which should set the policing team up for many years to come.
