LT McGuinness transformed an old storage warehouse and mechanic’s workshop into retail spaces and light-filled open plan offices for RCP, one of New Zealand’s largest project management companies.
To retain as much of the existing structure as possible, the steel and roof were left exposed and all services are on show. Externally, a new cantilevered 6m-high glazed façade was installed with corrugated iron and adjacent corten steel to maintain the retro look and feel.
A breakout space in the open plan office opens out through four, 5m-high sliding stacking doors onto an external deck which overlooks the city and provides superb views. The finished building is a striking ‘battleship grey’ that features RCP’s distinctive logo on the upper corner.
Exposing the concrete floors, roof and services meant that all finishes had to be millimetre perfect. Joining the old and new is always a challenge and the site team spent considerable time surveying and setting out to ensure everything precisely pieced together.
