Shed 22, Mac’s Brew Bar

Project Summary

Client: Willis Bond And Co

Project Type: Heritage

Project Timeframe: 2002

Architects: Athfield Architects

Project Description

Shed 22, which was built in 1922 as a woolstore, was another heritage project in the Taranaki Wharf area, a highly popular part of the Wellington waterfront.

LT McGuinness worked with Willis Bond and Co and Athfield Architects to give Shed 22 a new lease of life with a bar, restaurant, function room, offices and a sophisticated working brewery all part of the development plan. To preserve the building’s unique aspects an entirely new internal structure was erected within the existing shell.

The brewery was later taken out because of its limited capacity, and the name changed from ‘Wellington Brewing Company’ to ‘Mac’s Brew Bar’.  It remains a well-patronised drinking spot next to two other heritage buildings, the NZX Centre and the Free Ambulance Building.
